Walking Trails

Walking trails offer an active means to explore the natural world at Tidbinbilla. With 17 marked trails, ranging from an easy 15 minute stroll to an all day bushwalk there is something to suit everyone.

  • Birrigai Time Trail 3 km 1 hr Easy (Level 2): Step back in time on this well-signed heritage walk across the grasslands on your way to the Birrigai Aboriginal Rock Shelter.
  • Turkey Hill Trail 500 m 15 mins Easy (Level 2): Enjoy the granite boulders and fantastic panorama of the mountains on this short walk around Turkey Hill.
  • Xanthorrhoea Loop 2.5 km 45 mins Easy (Level 2): Explore patches of heath amongst grassland habitats before emerging into a magnificent stand of grass trees.
  • Gibraltar Rocks 6 km 2.5 hrs Challenging (Level 3): Be rewarded with spectacular views after a steep, challenging climb from the valley floor up to the massive granite tors of Gibraltar Rocks.
  • Church Rock Heritage Loop 2.5 km 1 hr Easy (Level 2): Follow the footsteps of the early pioneers on this well-signed heritage walk to Church Rock.
  • Devils Gap 6 km 2 hrs Moderate (Level 3): A short but steep walk up the fire trail through dry mountain eucalypt forest.
  • Woodland Trail 1.6 km 1 hr Easy (Level 2): Stroll through pleasant native grasslands for glimpses of eastern grey kangaroos and wallaroos resting in the shade.
  • Black Flats Dam 300 m 15 mins Easy (Level 2): A short walk to enjoy the tranquility of Black Flats Dam and its black swans, platypuses and other wildlife.
  • Sanctuary Loop 2.1 km 1.5 hr Easy (Level 1) (short trail 1.1 km 1 hr Easy Level 1): A series of interconnected habitat zones, linked by an informative and interesting walking trail that is wheelchair friendly.
  • Fishing Gap 7.7 km 3 hrs Challenging (Level 3): Tall mountain gums and wet fern gullies frame this meandering walk along the fire trail.
  • Ashbrook Trail 6.5 km 2 hrs Moderate (Level 3): This walk starts at Hanging Rock car park, follow the management trail along Ashbrook Creek before climbing through tall forests and woodland to meet up with Mountain Creek Road near the Camel Back car park.
  • Hanging Rock 500 m 25 mins Easy (Level 2): A short walk along the creek through the tall eucalypts brings you to magnificent granite tors once used as a shelter by local Aboriginal people.
  • Peppermint Trail 1.8 km 45 mins Easy (Level 2): From the Koala Path, follow the gravel track that winds its way through the tall eucalypt trees and across crystal clear Mountain Creek, whilst keeping an eye out for koalas.
  • Koala Path 700 m 20 mins Easy (Level 1): Don’t forget to look out for koalas as you take a short stroll through the wet eucalypt forest, home to wombats, wallabies, echidnas and many species of birds and reptiles. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Lyrebird Trail 2 km 1.5 hrs Moderate (Level 2): A walk of contrasts, this trail passes in and out of moist fern filled gullies and open forest, whilst keeping an eye and ear open for signs of the elusive superb lyrebird.
  • Cascades Trail 1.8 km 1 hr Moderate (Level 2): A great walk to escape from the heat or explore on a cool wet day, this picturesque walk climbs and winds through the wet forest and meets a cascading mountain stream.
  • Camel Back 12.5 km 4 hrs Challenging (Level 4): This challenging walk follows the management trail to Camels Hump through towering eucalypt trees before emerging into the sub-alpine snow gum woodland, with breathtaking views to the east and the west.
